Even the best motor vehicle will not function properly if its transmission is not properly maintained. Gear oils - how often should the fluid in the car be changed?

It is impossible to give a clear, universal answer to this question. Generally, the frequency of changing your car's oil depends on the following factors:

• age of the car (the older the car model and the components contained in it, the more often the gear oil should be changed),
• method of use (replacement should take place more often in the case of intensive driving over long distances, rather than during occasional, leisurely rides),
• recommendations provided by the manufacturer of a given vehicle model.

In general, however, you can relatively often come across opinions according to which the correct practice is to change the oil approximately every 80-110 thousand kilometers of the route traveled.

This is not the only rule worth remembering. Changing the gear oil is a task that should be performed after purchasing a used car. This increases the chances that the vehicle will not be exposed to improper use while driving.

Gear oils - what are the quality classes?

An important parameter enabling the assessment of the quality of a given gear oil and whether it can be poured into a given car model is the API GL type classification.

Currently, we can distinguish two valid API quality classes.

• GL-4 – characterized by very good protection against corrosion and good anti-wear properties. Recommended for cases made of metals sensitive to corrosion.
• GL-5 – characterized by good anti-corrosion properties and very good anti-wear properties. Recommended for boxes operating in difficult conditions.

API GL rating is just one factor to consider when selecting gear oil. The purchase of this fluid is a seemingly insignificant decision, but in fact it has a very important impact on the operation of the car in the future. This state of affairs means that it is necessary to choose a good quality fluid.
